# FAQ

Answers to the things that come up most, grouped by where they bite.

## Installing

:::details[The plugin will not enable and the console mentions the version]
AetherSkyWars needs Minecraft 1.21.11 or newer. It checks on startup and shuts itself down
rather than running half broken on an older server.

There is no compatibility mode and support for older versions was removed on purpose. Update
the server.

See [Installation](/getting-started/installation).
:::

:::details[The console says something about WorldEdit]
WorldEdit or FastAsyncWorldEdit is a hard dependency, used to paste and copy arena
schematics. Install it into `plugins/` and restart.
:::

:::details[First start hangs or logs download errors]
On its first run the plugin downloads a few libraries into
`plugins/AetherSkyWars/lib`, so the jar itself stays small. That needs outbound HTTPS access.

On a firewalled or air-gapped box, run the plugin once somewhere with internet, then copy the
whole `lib` folder across.
:::

:::details[Do I need Java 21?]
Yes. Minecraft 1.21.11 itself requires it, so if your server is running at all you almost
certainly already have it. `java -version` will tell you.
:::

## Arenas

:::details[My arena does not appear in the maps menu]
Most likely it is still unregistered, meaning setup was never finished. Run `/asw finish`
while editing it, or `/asw register <name>`.

Check the full setup list in [Creating an arena](/features/creating-an-arena). A
missing spectator location or missing boundaries will also hold it back.
:::

:::details[The world does not reset properly after a match]
Almost always the boundaries. The WorldEdit selection has to cover the whole arena including
its full height.

Re-select it, run `//expand vert`, then save the arena again.

It bites harder on a `schematic` arena, where the selection is exactly what gets cleared before
the schematic is pasted again. Blocks outside it are never cleaned and carry into the next match.
A `default` arena restores its whole saved world folder either way.
:::

:::details[I changed my schematic arena in game and the change disappeared]
That is how a `schematic` arena works. The file is the arena, and every reset clears the boundary
and pastes it again.

Edit the map where you originally built it, `//schem save` over the same file name, copy it back
into `plugins/AetherSkyWars/maps`, then run `/asw reset <name>`. Cages, chests, and the boundary
are stored with the arena rather than in the schematic, so they survive.

A `default` arena is the other way round. `/asw editmap`, change the world, `/asw finish`.
:::

:::details[Which world type should I pick?]
`default` if you want to build the map in game by hand. `schematic` if the map already exists
somewhere else, or you want the same arena on several servers.

The full comparison, including how each one resets and how you change it later, is on
[Arenas and modes](/features/arenas-and-modes#world-types).
:::

:::details[Players spawn in the wrong place, or fall into the void at the start]
Check the cages. There has to be one cage per island, matching the number you gave the create
command. A player with no cage has nowhere to be put.
:::

:::details[Another world manager keeps loading or unloading my arena worlds]
Arena worlds are managed by AetherSkyWars. Tell Multiverse-Core or My\_Worlds to ignore them,
and do not add them as managed worlds there.
:::

:::details[Can I change an arena from Solo to Teams?]
No. The mode is fixed when the arena is created, because the cage layout depends on it.
Create a new arena, or `/asw duplicate` the old one and rebuild it.
:::

## Gameplay

:::details[Chests are empty]
Two usual causes.

First, the chests were never tagged. Placing a chest is not enough, you have to mark it as
tier 1 or tier 2 with the setup items.

Second, the loot table for the tier the match is running is empty. Check with
`/asw seetier NORMAL NORMAL`.

See [Chests and loot](/features/chests-and-loot).
:::

:::details[Some players cannot vote for Epic chests]
That is the design. Each vote option is a separate permission, so you can keep some for
ranks. Grant `asw.epic` to let everyone vote for it.

See [Permissions](/configuration/permissions).
:::

:::details[Bow trails do nothing]
Check the particle name in `shops.yml`. Particle names changed in Minecraft 1.20.5. The
plugin translates the old names, but a name that was never valid still does nothing.

`POOF`, not `EXPLOSION_NORMAL`. `LARGE_SMOKE`, not `SMOKE_LARGE`.
:::

:::details[Matches never start]
`Config.Min-Players-ToStart` defaults to 2, so a single player waits forever. Lower it for
testing, or use `/asw forcestart`.
:::

:::details[Players keep their match inventory after leaving]
Check `Config.Disable-Player-Reset`. With it set to `true`, the plugin stops saving and
restoring inventories around matches, on the assumption another plugin is doing it. Set it
back to `false` if nothing else is.
:::

## Data and stats

:::details[Stats are different depending on which server a player joins]
Each server is using its own SQLite file. On a network, point every server at the same MySQL
database.

See [Storage](/configuration/storage).
:::

:::details[Leaderboards are out of date]
They rebuild on a timer, not after every kill. `Config.Refresh-Leaderboards` controls how
often. Run `/asw refreshLeaderboards` to rebuild now.
:::

:::details[My placeholders show as raw text]
PlaceholderAPI is not installed, or the expansion did not register. Look for
`Hooked on PlaceholderAPI!` in the startup log, then test with
`/papi parse me %aetherskywars_kills%`.

See [Placeholders](/reference/placeholders).
:::

:::details[I edited maps.yml and my changes vanished]
Arena data is written back on shutdown, so anything you change in that file while the server
runs gets overwritten. Use `/asw editmap` and the settings menus instead.
:::

## Customising

:::details[How do I change a message?]
Edit the file for your language in `plugins/AetherSkyWars/languages/`, then `/asw reload`.
Keep the `%placeholders%` intact.

See [Messages and languages](/configuration/messages-and-languages).
:::

:::details[Can I use hex colours and gradients?]
Yes, anywhere you can type text. `&#FF8800`, `<GRADIENT:FF0000>text</GRADIENT:0000FF>`, and
`<RAINBOW>text</RAINBOW>` all work, alongside the legacy `&` codes.
:::

:::details[My custom items show as blank or missing]
The bundled config includes `CUSTOM_MODEL_DATA` values as examples. Without a resource pack
that has those models, they can render as nothing. Remove the `CUSTOM_MODEL_DATA` lines.

See [Items and slots](/configuration/items-and-slots).
:::

:::details[Can I use my server economy instead of coins?]
Yes, with Vault installed. Set `Config.Use-Vault-As-Currency` to `true`. The console logs
which currency it picked on startup.
